Situated in the historic town of Maddur, between Bangalore and Mysore, the Mr. Abdul Kareem Residence stands as an architectural landmark of progressive contemporary design. Commissioned by a prominent local family, the residence was conceived to reflect a modern, cosmopolitan lifestyle while respecting the warmth, hospitality, and close community traditions of regional Karnataka.

The primary design challenge was creating a grand domestic presence on a substantial plot while maintaining an intimate, human scale across the family’s everyday living spaces. Our concept broke down the vertical mass into a series of elegantly floating horizontal planes, warm wooden accents, and lush garden terraces.

Volumetric Hierarchy: Floating Slabs and Continuous Light Bands

The facade’s signature architectural gesture is its crisp, white cantilevered floor slabs that project outward beyond the building envelope. These horizontal slabs appear to defy gravity, accentuated by recessed reveal joints and continuous integrated cove lighting along their undersides.

By stepping the upper volumes back from the ground floor, each level acquires its own generous landscaped balcony. Cascading vines and vibrant tropical plants drape gently over the edges of these terraces, softening the modern geometric lines and creating a living green buffer that naturally purifies the air and provides cooling shade to the rooms within.

Material Harmony: Teak Cladding, Stucco, and Metal Louvers

Materiality is central to the residence’s emotional resonance. Expansive vertical accent panels clad in natural warm teak wood run through the facade, drawing the eye upward and providing an organic counterbalance to the pristine white stucco planes. These timber surfaces are treated with UV-resistant natural oils to preserve their deep amber richness against the harsh Deccan sun.

Slender dark-bronze powder-coated aluminium louvers are installed along strategic balcony openings. These louvers act as dynamic privacy screens, allowing occupants to gaze outward across the Maddur landscape while preventing sightlines into private family spaces from the street below.

Spatial Flow: Grand Entertaining Meets Everyday Intimacy

The interior architecture is choreographed around a clear division between ceremonial entertaining zones and private family retreats. Arriving guests are welcomed onto a raised entrance verandah flanked by manicured green lawns and an architectural water feature. The grand formal living room features 12-foot high ceilings, large Italian marble floor slabs, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels that flood the room with daylight.

Beyond the formal zone lies an open-plan family lounge, dining area, and modular kitchen designed for multi-generational gatherings. An internal open-to-sky courtyard with an ornamental frangipani tree sits at the center of the plan, drawing breezes and sky views into the private heart of the home.

Boundary Architecture and Street Presence

The residence’s architectural language extends seamlessly to its boundary perimeter. The front compound wall combines fair-faced stone bases with horizontal teak slats and dark steel framing, establishing a harmonious relationship with the main villa.

A custom motorized sliding gate incorporates the same timber-and-steel motif, presenting an impressive, secure, and inviting threshold that elevates the architectural quality of the entire neighborhood.
